Job Description

Job Summary:
The Parent Counselor provides professional guidance, emotional support, and practical strategies to parents seeking to enhance their parenting skills, strengthen family relationships, and navigate challenges related to child development and behavioral concerns. This role involves counseling, education, and resource coordination to empower parents in fostering healthy and nurturing home environments.
Key Responsibilities:
Counseling & Support:

  • Conduct individual and group counseling sessions with parents to address parenting challenges, family dynamics, and behavioral concerns.
  • Provide crisis intervention and emotional support to parents experiencing family-related stressors.
  • Utilize evidence-based counseling techniques to support positive parenting practices.
  • Offer culturally competent counseling services tailored to diverse family structures and backgrounds.
Parent Education & Training:
  • Develop and facilitate parenting workshops and training programs on topics such as discipline strategies, communication skills, child development, and conflict resolution.
  • Educate parents on child development milestones, mental health concerns, and effective behavior management techniques.
  • Provide resources and referrals to additional support services as needed.
Assessment & Case Management:
  • Conduct assessments to identify parenting challenges, strengths, and areas for growth.
  • Develop individualized action plans to support parents in improving their caregiving strategies.
  • Maintain detailed and confidential records of counseling sessions, progress notes, and referrals.
Collaboration & Advocacy:
  • Work closely with schools, social service agencies, healthcare professionals, and community organizations to coordinate support for families.
  • Advocate for parents and children by connecting them with relevant community resources, including mental health services, educational support, and financial assistance programs.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings to ensure holistic care and intervention for families.
Qualifications & Requirements:
Education & Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Counseling, Social Work, Psychology, Child Development, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred).
  • Certification or licensure in counseling, social work, or a related field (e.g., LPC, LCSW, LMFT) is a plus.
  • Minimum of 2-3 years of experience in family counseling, parent coaching, social work, or a related field.
Skills & Competencies:
  • Strong knowledge of parenting strategies, child development, and family dynamics.
  • Excellent communication, active listening, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to establish trust and rapport with diverse families.
  • Proficiency in conflict resolution and crisis intervention.
  • Strong organizational and documentation skills.
  • Knowledge of community resources and support services for families.
Other Requirements:
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, based on family needs.
  • Background check and clearance in accordance with state and federal regulations.
  • Bilingual skills (preferred but not required).
Work Environment:
  • This position may involve working in an office setting, schools, community centers, or conducting home visits.
  • Hybrid or remote options may be available depending on the employer’s policies and the needs of the families served.
