The Planning and Public Works’ Office of Resilience and Climate Action (ORCA) team has a few Planner 2 positions that will focus on Rural Forestry, Urban Forestry, and Salmon Recovery. You will have a great opportunity to apply your experience and knowledge of natural systems and sustainability to be one of the leaders in Pierce County's Sustainability efforts. You will be responsible for performing a wide range of functions, including planning, project management, and community engagement. The ORCA division of Planning & Public Works coordinates work across Pierce County departments and with partners to plan and implement the Sustainability 2030 Plan , provide environmental education, and steward lands for conservation and climate resilience. Urban Forestry & Green Stormwater Infrastructure – This position will work closely with Pierce County Parks and Surface Water Management as well as community partners to increase urban green space that protects communities from climate impacts like flooding and heat, sequesters greenhouse gas emissions, and improves air quality, water quality, and community health. This position will support project planning, implementation, and reporting to meet urban tree canopy and green stormwater infrastructure goals across Pierce County strategic plans. The Forestry & Green Stormwater Infrastructure Planner will focus on implementing nature-based climate solution actions in the Sustainability 2030 Plan and integrating best practices for urban green spaces across County projects and programs.
Rural Forestry – This position will work with staff across Pierce County departments and regional partners to support the development of Community Forest initiatives, conservation of working forestland, and assistance for small forest landowners. In coordination with partners, this position will develop and implement programs and plans that improve ecosystem services, climate resilience, and sustainable forest-based economies. This position will require exceptional relationship-building and communication skills for a wide variety of audiences, understanding and background in local natural resource management, forestry, and ecological function, and experience in research, meeting facilitation, and strategic planning.
