The Queen’s Medical Center’s interdisciplinary approach brings together different types of specialists to treat various orthopedic-related disorders and injuries. The Orthopedic Institute uses the expertise of orthopedic surgeons, hospitalist and pain specialists, anesthesiologists, residents, orthopedic nurses, physical and occupational therapists, advanced practice nurses, case managers, social workers and nurse’s aides. JOB SUMMARY/RESPONSIBILITIES :

Provides high-quality, coordinated, comprehensive, team-based, and patient-centered care for patients of The Queen’s Health System’s (QHS) hospitals and clinics, and other hospitals and clinics, as applicable, in the area of orthopedic surgery – hand and upper extremity. Responsible for diagnosing and prescribing a course of treatment, surgery, and therapy for patients with disorders, malformations, diseases and/or injuries to the musculoskeletal system, with a focus and/or interest in orthopedic hand and upper extremity conditions. Must engage in academic medical/clinical education, training, supervision, evaluation, and research. Works cooperatively within collaborative practice models.

II. PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

CLINICAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

Examines patients, creates and designs treatment/therapeutic plans, takes and reviews patient case histories, orders imaging and laboratory tests, interprets imaging and laboratory test results and examination findings, and enters orders in patients’ electronic health record within guidelines for timeliness. Determines, and participates in the direction of procedures for pre-operative and post-operative care, inclusive of administering sedatives and prescribing diets. Performs surgical procedures consistent with training and practice patterns, and coordinates operation care with anesthesia staff. Performs fracture treatment by open or closed methods, using appropriate devices such as braces, casts, and splints, as appropriate. Participates in the management of orthopedic surgery services, scheduling of operations, and assignment of surgical staff. Participates in hand and replant call as applicable, rotates in orthopedic call schedules, responds to calls in a timely fashion, provides consultation and care for patients in need of urgent/emergent orthopedic surgery services, and provides appropriate follow up care. Arranges appropriate coverage of patients and consultations when not available. Manages patient care in hospital and outpatient settings, as applicable, and manages and assists in the management of patients with surgical complications.

ADMINISTRATIVE

Assures a high level of quality in all functions of the program, inclusive of assisting with managing orthopedic surgery-specific clinical equipment, educating surgical staff, and providing medical student, resident, and fellow education and supervision. Assists with maintaining accreditations, certifications, licensures, and meeting all hospital, corporate, and government policies and regulations, for assigned area. Assists with maintaining standards set by QHS, QHS hospitals, The Queen’s University Medical Group (QUMG) and national benchmarks for orthopedic surgery. Assists with development of policies and procedures for the program, based upon relevant certification, accreditation, and regulatory guidance. Participates in multidisciplinary team meetings for the program and quality assurance and performance meetings, as applicable. Coordinates with support services departments and teams to provide the best patient care. Develops clinical pathways in collaboration with the other departments and participates in the development of medical services, including protocols, workflows, standard operating procedures, and management of patient care related activities, as needed. Maintains collaboration to build orthopedic surgery services with other orthopedic surgeons, orthopedic trauma services, trauma service line, emergency department, radiology, anesthesiology, billing and coding teams, facilities, finance, CARE*Link, IT support, and marketing. Performs other related duties as assigned.

III. TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS :

Continuous: sitting, static gripping of an object for prolonged periods. Frequent: walking. Occasional: standing, stooping/bending, climbing stairs, walking on uneven ground, lifting and carrying usual weight of 1 pound up to 5 pounds, reaching above, at, and below shoulder level, frequent gripping of an object.

IV. TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS :

Not substantially subjected to adverse environmental conditions. Exposure to hazardous chemicals and infectious agents is an occupational risk; therefore, standard safety regulations must be maintained to avoid contamination.

VI. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :

EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION AND LICENSURE:

Graduate of an accredited School of Medicine or EC FMG certification. Completion of a Hand Surgery fellowship training program sponsored by the American Society for Surgery of Hand (ASSH) and approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or the American Osteopathic Association (AOA). Current board certification in Orthopedic Surgery by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOD) Medical Specialties (ABMS) or the AOA. If not board certified, board certification must be obtained within two (2) years of entrance into the position. Current unrestricted license to practice medicine in the State of Hawaii.

EXPERIENCE:

During the period of employment, shall be and remain a member of the applicable QHS hospitals’ medical staffs in good standing with appropriate privileges without restriction. Qualified for an appointment on the faculty of the University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine preferred.
